Six concerned citizens who wished to explore the possibility of a wellness and recreation facility formed Alleghany Wellness Center, Inc. in May 1996. The group is now a collaborative effort of county agencies, medical personnel, town and county government, Alleghany Memorial Hospital, Alleghany Health Department, Alleghany school system, and community volunteers.

 On the 16.3 acres of land purchased in May, 2000, AWCI has built an approximately 25,000 square foot facility with a six lane indoor pool, a therapy pool, an indoor walking track, a fitness and aerobic area, a multipurpose room with a demonstration kitchen, an assessment room, locker rooms and office spaces.  In following phases, a gymnasium and racquetball courts will be added.

Alleghany Wellness Center, Inc. is continuously developing objectives that will improve the health of Alleghany County and the surrounding areas.
